We Are Like Trained Dogs
Ever heard of Pavlov’s dogs? Pavlov was a Russian physiologist who studied conditioned responses. He would ring a bell, pull the leash on his dogs to where he placed the steak, and the dogs would eat the steak. The next day, he’d ring the bell, pull the leash, and the dogs ate the steak.
For those of us who know our dogs, we already know it wouldn’t take very long for the dogs to learn that the “bell” meant FOOD! In fact, if Pavlov rang the bell right after the dogs ate the steak, they would begin salivating immediately – even though they were no longer hungry. The bell triggered a conditioned salivation response.
Humans react in very similar, conditioned ways. For example, take the person who smokes. He may light up every morning upon arising, after each meal, getting into his car or while taking a break at work. He may also light up whenever he feels overwhelmed, exhausted or stressed. Each of those moments or feeling states in his day represent “bells.” He knows smoking is bad for him, but he says he just can’t help himself.
He has quit a number of times, but he returns to his habit – each time full of self-loathing. His return to smoking demonstrates the same theory as Pavlov’s dogs did. During certain times of day, and especially at the first sign of distress or discomfort, he thinks about a cigarette.
Like Pavlov’s dogs, we respond to the “bells.” Mention food to an overeater, and even if she isn’t hungry, she will feel an overwhelming urge to eat. Cigarette smokers behave in the same programmed way, responding to signals just like trained animals.
Hypnosis is a tool that can help release the negative or unhealthy conditioning and disconnect those “bells.” If you need some new brain-training, give me a call at 406-672-0637.
